Beyond the Classroom
Through this program, students and faculty gain insider access to traditional and organic farmlands, wildlife habitats, museums, conservation organizations, local businesses, government agencies and other sites to examine how environment and culture are closely interconnected - and how changes to one affect the other. The program recognizes the value of community-based learning.
Connecting the campus to the community provides a unique educational opportunity for students and faculty. CES has developed a list of community partners within easy reach of campus, as well as a list of possible activities for each location. The procedure for creating a community-based learning experience is easy:
- Identify the partners of the program that best fit your course plans.
- Submit a brief outline of potential activities and your desired schedule via campus mail to: Dr. John L. Seidel, Director, Center for the Environment and Society. Or contact jfairchild2@washcoll.edu or call 410-778-7295. CES staff will serve as a liaison with the community partner and make arrangements for your class visits. Anticipated costs for different programs are outlined in the description for each partner.
- Once the site plans are confirmed, faculty arrange transportation directly by calling the college Transportation Secretary at 410-810-7426.
