A Brief Outline of the Planning Office
The Department of Planning and Zoning serves the present and future inhabitants of Kent County, Maryland by conducting immediate and long-range planning; providing for the preservation and enhancement of the attractiveness of the county through good design and arrangement and by assuring the provision of adequate public utilities, services and facilities; protecting Kent County's significant natural and historic resources and historic areas against destruction or encroachment; protecting and preserving Kent County's agricultural industry and the prime agricultural soils essential to the conduct of this industry; implementing programs to improve substandard housing and developing new programs to address the need for workforce housing.
The Planning Office would be glad to speak to classes on any of the following subjects:
- The process of regulating zoning and planning.
- The manner in which departments of the local government work together.
- The types of conservation which can be addressed by planning and zoning.
Other Opportunities
- The Planning Office manages the following programs: Agricultural Land Preservation, Critical Area, Floodplain Management, Forest Conservation, Housing Improvement, Sediment Control, and Stormwater Management. The Planning Office is also responsible for the Kent County Comprehensive Plan and Land Use Ordinance.
- The County Commissioners have regular meetings every Tuesday which are open to the public. The Planning Commission meets the first Thursday of every month. Both could speak to a class about the mechanics of local politics.
- Several Kent County communities are in process of creating Master Plans, and have open community meetings which provide insight into the community planning process.
