Cannot Recycle

Where

In the green bins conveniently placed around campus.

When

Bins are collected early Tuesday mornings for dorms, so they should be taken out (as determined by your RAs) to the nearest curb accessible by Kent County Recycling trucks on Monday evenings.

Electronics and Batteries

Computers, cell phones, and iPods can be dropped off at the OIT Help Desk in the basement of Wm. Smith Hall. There is a rebate for recycling iPods. The Help Desk can also accept all types of household batteries (alkaline and computer). For more information contact Alisha at alisha.digian@mac.com.

Plastic Bags

Please take to Super Fresh.

If you would like to be more involved with recycling please come to the Student Environmental Alliance meetings, Tuesdays at 7 in the Service House, or contact Sam Bulkilvish at sbulkilvish2@washcoll.edu, the recycling coordinator.

Academic/Administrative Recycling

If there are green bins located in the buildings please feel free to use them as stated above. Faculty, staff, and students respectively are responsible for putting the bins out each Thursday night.

Within academic buildings there are also large blue bins provided for by the Shred It Recycling Company. Please feel free to put any paper in those bins except for corrugated cardboard.

RA Component

To make recycling as efficient and successful as possible we must have educated students who consistently participate. That requires each Resident Assistant to provide information, coordination, and oversight to their residents. The recycling program could not be successful without your help!

As an RA your responsibilities include making sure that there are enough bins to accommodate the recyclables generated throughout your halls, that students are recycling the appropriate materials (please visit the homepage), that each bin is taken out as necessary to prevent overflow or foul odors, and that bins are brought back in after curb side pick up and washing. The most effective way to ensure that bins are properly taken out and brought back in is to assign students to these duties weekly.

The following document will tell you where each curb side pick up is for each dorm. However if the bins are brought to the curb in a visible and accessible manner they should be picked up by Kent County.

As an RA you have direct contact with the recycling coordinator about any questions you might have. The recycling coordinator can provide more bins, information, and help organize recycling take out and pick up. Please contact the recycling coordinator, Sam Bulkilvish at sbulkilvish2@washcoll.edu.
