George Goes Green

George Goes Green

G3 2007

The second George Goes Green competition began with a variety of energy conservation approaches. George Goes Green

G3 2006

Students, faculty, and staff devised creative ways to conserve energy as part of the first George Goes Green competition.

George Goes Green

This campus-wide initiative for stewardship and sustainability encompasses everything from recycling to serving locally grown foods in the dining hall. Every time someone on campus does something to conserve energy or protect the environment, they're helping George Go Green. This initiative also cultivates respect for the surrounding landscape and the coastal and inland waters of the Chesapeake, which are invaluable to our sense of history, our sense of self, and our sense of place.

Did you know the College's first benefactor, George Washington, was also the first public figure to promote sustainable community practices, and that he used compost as a method to amend damaged soils? According to Paul Leland Haworth's 1915 biography, Washington "saved manure as if it were already so much gold, and hoped with its use and with judicious rotation of crops to accomplish good tilth." Even as he built a new nation and laid the foundation of the American presidency, Washington was determined to create a self-sufficient economy not only at Mount Vernon, but throughout America.

With Washington's pioneering spirit in mind, the College has branded georgegoesgreen.com to help raise awareness of stewardship and sustainability initiatives on campus and throughout the nation. Efforts include composting, recycling, using environmentally-friendly products, eating locally grown foods, landscaping with native plant materials, and lobbying for the design and construction of green buildings that consume less energy, use non-toxic materials, and produce less waste than traditional buildings.
