Echo Hill Outdoor School - Still Pond, MD
E.H.O.S. is a private, non-profit educational organization. Founded on the Eastern Shore in 1972, the school provides students of all ages with positive educational experiences in an outdoor setting. The main focal areas of the school are Ecology, History, Human Environment, and Individual and Group Development. Students interested in outdoor education and environmental learning are encouraged to apply. Students must enjoy working with children and being outside all day. Horn Point Labratory - Cambridge, MD
At the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Laboratory faculty are working on several research projects involving the biology, chemistry, physics, and ecology of organisms and ecosystems from the estuarine waters of the Chesapeake Bay to the waters of the world’s oceans. Although all openings for Summer 2011 are filled HPL offers summer internships to applicants with at least one year of course work towards a degree in biology or environmental science. The interns will become part of the oyster hatchery team and learn all aspects of oyster culture and be expected to assist in all facets of hatchery operation. Researchers at the facility work cooperatively with the Oyster Recovery Partnership and other UMD research programs, environmental groups, commercial oyster harvesters, management agencies, and other Universities in a joint effort that has produced over two billion oyster spat since 1997. Applicants must be able to lift at least 30lbs. and work in wet, humid environments. Check their website later in the year for opportunities in the 2012 season.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to “Save the Bay.” The availability of internships depends on the current projects and initiatives through CBF. A typical internship will be offered in the spring or fall semesters to students that are currently enrolled in school and working towards a degree. CBF takes pride in the large amount of hands-on work for interns interested and passionate towards the environment and protecting the Bay. Some of the kinds of internships offered by the CBF may include Environmental Education Intern, Oyster Restoration Intern, Online Communications Intern, Community Building Intern, Photography Intern, and even Pennsylvania Summer Legal Intern; an internship which provides contact with a wide range of teams including legal staff, scientists, lobbyists, public relations staff, and policy specialists. Sassafras River Association
The Sassafras River Association (SRA) is dedicated to promoting good water quality, balanced interaction with environment and an educated community that takes action to restore and maintain the health of the watershed. They are currently seeking an Administrative Intern to work on database maintenance, web maintenance, filing, copying and mass mailings. While working in the office the intern will gain exposure to the many environmental issues and basic grassroots of what environmentalism really is. This internship is not paid. Historic London Town and Gardens - Edgewater, MD
Colonial food ways, historic building preservation and reconstruction, and public interpretations are all potential areas of focus for internships at London Town. Liz Seidel, Archaeology Lab Director, would be a great point of contact for any Washington College student that is interested in an internship at London Town. Sultana Projects - Chestertown, MD
Sultana Projects practices Preservation through Education, helping students to better understand and appreciate the natural treasure that is the Chesapeake Bay. Sultana Projects seeks applicants for a Canoe and Kayak Program Summer Intern. The intern would be expected to be helping the other canoe guides load and unload the trailers, set up basic camping equipment, helping the tour guides explain history, ecology, science, estuarine science, and other facts about Chestertown and the Chesapeake Bay. They ask that Applicants be physically fit, have experience working with children, and be competent paddling canoes and kayaks. Washington Internship Institute
Through the Washington Internship Institute students can pay to be placed in an internship program that will not only give them the opportunity for on site work but will provide a well rounded experience in the field which they choose. An internship in the “Go Green!” program consists of 4 full days a week at your internship site, an internship seminar and environmental policy elective the other day of the week, convenient metro-accessible housing, and site visits to government agencies and environmental organizations. A sampling of possible internships with the “Go Green!” program are the Environmental Protection Agency, The National Zoo, Greenpeace USA, or the Climate Institute. Many of these internships are for students who are more interested in legislation and environmental policy. Juniors and seniors are preferred. To apply online visit their website.
Maryland League of Conservation Voters
The Maryland LCV is non-partisan, 501 (c)(4) known as the political voice for the environment. Founded in 1979 they have since grown into a full-time, staffed organization that is governed by a volunteer board of directors. They compile a yearly scorecard that evaluates the environmental votes of state legislators as well as grade the Governor’s environmental record. They work to pass pro-conservation laws in Annapolis and engage conservation minded voters on Election Day and beyond to hold their elected officials accountable. They are now accepting applications for the Summer of 2011. The internships offered are an Outreach/Electoral Intern in Baltimore City/County, Outreach Intern on the Eastern Shore, and Media Intern. Colchester Farms (Community Supported Agriculture)
Galena, MD
While all of the internship positions for the 2011 season are full Colchester Farms offers internships for individuals willing to work hard in the name of sustainable vegetable production and community supported agriculture. Crow Farm - Kennedyville, MD
Owned by Roy and Judy Crow the Crow Farm has been kept as agriculturally authentic as possible and their natural grass-fed beef is sold to local citizens and restaurants. The Farm provides summer internships to students looking to study more about agriculture as well as the bed and breakfast business as it is run in relation to the farm. Students that are interested in small farm operation should apply. The Crow Farm raises Black Angus beef cattle and also has a vineyard with a winery opening soon. Potential interns should be prepared to wake up early and get their hands dirty.

Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum - St Michaels, MD
The Maritime Museum is a non-profit organization committed to telling the stories of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that live around it. The Maritime Museum fosters an appreciation for the heritage of the Chesapeake Bay by exploring the connections and cultures of this special place and its people. Internship opportunities may include educational interns, folk life intern, special events intern, curatorial intern, and other more specific seasonal positions. Room and board, plus a stipend are included for most internships offered through CBMM. Internship information is posted on their website after the first of the year. Mariners Museum - Port News, VA
Volunteer opportunities available in tour guiding, artifact conservation, collection management, and landscaping. The museum has summer internships available for students interested in museum studies, cataloguing, researching artifacts, tour guiding, and even outdoor gardening/ landscape maintenance. Calvert Marine Museum - Solomons, MD
The Museum does offer internships in their marine research laboratories and in archeology artifact identifying, but students must apply through Calvert County because the Museum is owned by the county. Eastern Shore Land Conservancy
ESLC is a private, nonprofit land conservation organization; their mission as stated on their website is to preserve and sustain the vibrant communities of the Eastern Shore and the lands and waters that connect them. They are currently working to launch the Center for Towns, a new program aimed at supporting and strengthening small towns. Two of the internships announced for summer 2011 will be working directly with this new program. They are offering a Land Steward Intern position, a Community Design Intern position, and a Community Conservation Intern position, which all give one the opportunity to be part of a team of conservation professionals. Student Conservation Association
The Student Conservation Association is a large organization that strives to get students further into the field while developing career goals. Virginia Institute of Marine Science
Summer internship opportunities for undergraduates wanting to pursue interest in marine science will work on research vessels and in the laboratories at VMS. Room and board is included with transferable credit. Visit their website for further information.
Council Fire - Annapolis, MD

The internship program promises involvement in all types of projects that produce positive economic, environmental and social impacts. The National Aquarium - Baltimore, MD
The National Aquarium in Baltimore aims to provide transforming experiences that will inspire people to enjoy, respect, and protect the aquatic world. They aim to confront the issues facing global aquatic habitats through science, conservation, and educational programming. The Aquarium offers internships for college students on a seasonal basis. These internships require a minimum of 120 hours within a chosen semester and that the college awards credits for the student’s work. No internships are currently offered here but Great Falls offers plenty of volunteer opportunities: trail crew, education/interpretations, special events and projects. Call the park and ask about their volunteer opportunities. It would be a nice place to work outside and feel remote, within close proximity of the city life.
